What Our Clients Say About Us

Frequently Asked Questions About Rapid Prototyping

What is rapid prototyping, and what services does XTJ CNC offer?

Rapid prototyping is the fast fabrication of physical parts directly from CAD designs for testing, validation, and iteration. XTJ CNC offers four prototyping methods: Vacuum Forming (plastic sheet forming over a mold), Rapid 3D Printing (additive layer-by-layer manufacturing), CNC Machining (precision subtractive machining), and Sheet Metal Fabrication (cutting, bending, and welding metal sheets).

How fast can you deliver a prototype?

Lead times depend on the method: Rapid 3D Printing delivers in as little as 24–48 hours for small parts; Vacuum Forming in 1–3 days; CNC Machined prototypes in 3–5 days; Sheet Metal prototypes in 2–5 days. Expedited service is available. All timelines include DFM review and quality inspection.

What materials do you offer for rapid prototyping?

We offer 50+ materials across all prototyping methods. Plastics include ABS, PLA, PETG, Nylon, PEEK, Polycarbonate, TPU, and resin. Metals include aluminum (6061), stainless steel (304/316), titanium (Grade 5), brass, copper, and mild steel. Our engineers can advise on the best material for your application, environment, and budget.

What tolerances can you achieve for prototypes?

CNC-machined prototypes achieve ±0.005mm standard, down to ±0.002mm for precision parts. 3D-printed parts achieve ±0.1–0.2mm depending on resolution and material. Vacuum-formed parts achieve ±0.5mm typical. Sheet metal prototypes achieve ±0.05mm with laser cutting. All parts are CMM-inspected before shipping.

Do you accept NDAs to protect my design IP?

Yes. We gladly sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) before reviewing any CAD files or design data. All uploaded files are handled securely and never shared with third parties. Submit an inquiry, and we will send our NDA for your review before any file transfer takes place.

What file formats do you accept for prototyping?

We accept STEP (.stp), STL, IGES (.igs), DXF, DWG, and SOLIDWORKS files. For 3D printing, we also accept OBJ and AMF formats. PDF 2D drawings are accepted alongside 3D files. Our engineers review all files and provide free DFM feedback within 24 hours of submission.

Can you transition from prototype to low-volume production?

Yes. This is one of XTJ CNC’s core strengths. Once your prototype is validated, we can seamlessly scale to low-volume production (100–1,000 parts) or full production runs using the same materials, tolerances, and finishes. Our integrated CNC machining and sheet metal capabilities mean no supplier change is needed.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ) for prototyping?

We have no minimum order quantity (MOQ). We produce single one-off prototypes through to production runs of 10,000+ parts. This makes XTJ CNC the ideal partner for every stage of your product development cycle — from first concept through to market launch.
